Popes -- 1,975 Years and Counting....

Attached below is a link to the New Advent page which gives the lineage of Popes. This is obviously an important topic for our RCIA class and I've wanted to give them a place to read about the history of the Popes.

Thought I'd pass it along, but also ask if anyone is aware of any historical disputes regarding the early Popes? Is this list definitive?

Thanks and God bless!

The "as-official-as-it-gets" list of Popes can be found in a book called the Annuario Pontificio (Pontifical Yearbook). From what I understand, the Annuario Pontificio lists Pope Benedict XVI as the 265th Pope. Here is the information from the 2005 edition. The site has some other interesting information also.

You see some list 266 Popes because, as New Advent notes, Stephen II (Stephanus) was elected but died before he was consecrated.

As far as "historical disputes", are you talking about the Antipopes? And what do you mean by "early"?

Wanna really get your mind blown? Look up "anti-pope" at wikipedia. That's some confusing stuff right there!
